Across these pebble-strapped sands men have fought and died, leaving nothing behind but legend.



Endless tides have washed the harsh memories from a ragged shore-line which once ran red with the blood of those who rushed out to defend it.

Exciting or what? Pete World has discovered a mediaeval midden in his back garden in Beaumaris. What’s a midden? It’s a deposit containing shells, animal bones and other domestic refuse. Not very exciting for the average treasure seeker I’ll grant you, but I have to admit to being excited by ancient cooking crocks and historical humerus … or should that be umerus? It’s all old latin to me.

O.K. so you've had a great day - found a bag of mediaeval verdigris treasures - they've been through the wash and brush up - next day they dry out, powder and flake. Nightmare.

RENAISSANCE Micro-Crystalline Wax Polish.

There's something timelessly romantic about a tiny fragment of sea-tossed tableware which still bears the initials of an old shipping line … or the corroded fragment of a Victorian pocket watch which ceased to work for all eternity when it was dropped into the sea.

STRANGER ENCOUNTERS



LOCATION: Newborough



GIST: Another day on the beach. Tinkling voices in the sand hills - yummy mummies and a bevy of golden haired model offspring - a vision of voluminous hair and cotton thread legs.



The one in green chiffon is prancing in the long grasses gazing out to sea - then freezes as I cross her line of vision heavily laden with plastic bags, drift wood and fisherman’s nets.



SHE: (Screeching, pointing in my direction) “Take nothing from this place. Bring only your love and leave behind only your footprints in the sand.”



ME: “Be still fragrant one, enjoy your day and then go in peace to your 4x4. I am actually cleaning up the beach, thus making the world a better place for you to dream in.”
